7 Years in Care
Shaye's journey through foster care began at just six months old, and after several placements, she was adopted. Growing up, her adoptive mom encouraged open communication about their adoption and kept the connection with their biological family.
After graduating high school in 2019, Shaye pursued her passion for hairstyling and has been a licensed hairstylist for the past five years. However, her deep desire to give back to foster youth and families led her to return to school. Through a waiver available to those who’ve been in foster care, Shaye is now studying Sociology with plans to use it as a stepping stone for law school.
Shaye’s commitment to fostering positive change is evident in her nearly three years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children in foster care. She also works as a lead peer coach for former foster youth navigating higher education, offering guidance, resources, and emotional support.
Shaye plans to transfer to Texas A&M University, continue her advocacy work, and eventually pursue a law degree to practice child protective law. Her lived experience and dedication to helping others ensure she will continue making a lasting impact.
