Kaliyah Phelps

She/Her

6 Years in Care

Kaliyah entered foster care at age 12. As the only child in her family placed in foster care, Kaliyah faced unique challenges and realized early how critical it is for children to have adults who truly listen and care.  Being in care was challenging, and she often struggled with feelings of anger and not belonging—but those experiences taught her resilience, self-advocacy, and the importance of support.

Kaliyah is a dedicated student and volunteer, excelling academically with consistent honors recognition and Dean’s List achievements at the University of St. Thomas, where she is pursuing a dual major in Social Work and Criminal Justice. She has actively mentored youth through programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters, volunteered at schools, animal shelters, and food distribution centers, and participates in community initiatives supporting foster youth, emphasizing emotional, academic, and social growth.

A passionate advocate and creative thinker, Kaliyah aims to pursue a career as a therapist for children and adolescents, with a focus on foster youth and LGBTQIA communities. She also engages in artistic projects and faith-based activities, combining her creativity, compassion, and lived experience to support, inspire, and lead others toward healing and opportunity.
