University of Utah First Star Academy
About this resource
The University of Utah First Star Academy is a four-year college-prep program for high school students in foster care. Youth enter the program in 9th grade and participate through 12th grade, regardless of placement changes, reunification, or adoption.
The program includes Saturday sessions during the school year and a four-week summer academy on the University of Utah campus. Activities focus on academics, ACT prep, and building life skills such as budgeting and conflict resolution. Scholars also benefit from stable relationships with staff and peers throughout high school.
First Star is a partnership between the University of Utah, First Star (a national nonprofit), Utah’s Division of Child and Family Services, the Division of Juvenile Justice and Youth Services, and the Utah State Board of Education. The goal is to improve educational outcomes and support a successful transition to adulthood for youth in foster care.
