About this resource

The Blavin Scholars Program offers a community of support (including mentors and coaches) for undergraduate U-M students who have experienced foster care, kinship care and/or are navigating their educational journey without the support of their parents or guardians.

The Blavin Scholars program will provide you with:

  • A mentor who will support you with on-campus information
  • A campus coach who will provide one-on-one support
  • 24/7 support from on-call staff
  • Access to campus departments and resources
  • A community and opportunities to bond
  • Options for year-round housing (includes holidays and breaks)
  • Financial aid assistance and resources
  • The chance to get a Blavin scholarship (up to $5,000 given to active participants per academic year)

Who can use this resource (eligibility)?

Students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program who have demonstrated financial and have experienced time in foster care are eligible.

Students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program who have demonstrated financial need and:

• who are orphans/wards of the court

• are currently in kinship care

• have experienced, or are experiencing homelessness

• qualify for independent student status through the U-M financial aid application process as a result of having a compromised support network

• Full time enrollment is required
