Oklahoma Medicaid: SoonerCare

About this resource

SoonerCare is Oklahoma’s Medicaid program. It helps people who don’t have much money get the health care they need, like doctor visits, hospital care, or medicine. The money for SoonerCare comes from both the U.S. government and the state of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) runs the program and decides who qualifies based on their income.

Who can use this resource (eligibility)?

  • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires states to provide young adults under 26 with free health care if they were in foster care at age 18 or older. This ensures that former foster youth can access the health care services they need – just like non-foster youth who can stay on their parents’ insurance plans until 26.

To qualify for SoonerCare, a person must:

  • Reside in Oklahoma;
  • Be a U.S. citizen or qualified alien (most immigrants who arrived after August 22, 1996 are barred from the program for five years);
  • Meet financial income and resources standards in certain categories.
