Montana Medicaid

About this resource

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires states to provide young adults under 26 with free health care if they were in foster care at age 18 or older. This ensures that former foster youth can access the health care services they need.

If you're in foster care in Montana, you can get Medicaid, which helps cover doctor visits, medicine, and other health care—usually automatically. Even after you leave foster care, you can still get this coverage until you turn 26.

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) runs this program to make sure young people in and out of foster care can get the health care they need.

Who can use this resource (eligibility)?

Montana will provide Medicaid for current, or former foster youth, who qualify under the Affordable Care Act until age 26 if they age out of care in Montana, or move into Montana. Foster youth are presumed eligible.
