Michigan Office of the Child Advocate

About this resource

An Ombudsman (a word from Sweden that means "representative") is someone who helps protect the rights of kids and teens in foster care. In Michigan, this job is done by the Office of the Child Advocate. They look into complaints or problems with the child welfare system—especially if a young person’s rights might be violated.

The Child Advocate doesn’t work for DHS or your case team, so they can look at your situation fairly and from an outside point of view. They can investigate, suggest changes, and help make the system better for youth.

If you think something isn’t right or your rights aren’t being respected, you can file a complaint online—no one’s permission is needed.
