The Chafee Education and Training Vouchers (ETV) Program is a California initiative designed to support current and former foster youth in pursuing higher education or career training. Eligible participants can receive up to $5,000 annually to assist with expenses such as tuition, books, housing, and other costs associated with post-secondary education or vocational training.

Who can use this resource (eligibility)?

You may be eligible for the Chafee ETV Program if:

  • You were in foster care in California between the ages of 16 and 18.

  • You were in a Kin-GAP, non-related legal guardianship, or adopted, and were in foster care between ages 16 and 18.

  • You were placed in out-of-home care by a tribe or tribal organization between ages 16 and 18.

  • You have not reached your 26th birthday as of July 1st of the award year.

  • You have not participated in the program for more than 5 years (consecutive or not).
