Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab is living proof that your beginnings don’t define your future, your resilience does. From the challenges of childhood loss and foster care to making history in California’s State Senate, Aisha’s story is an inspiration for foster youth and families nationwide.

Aisha was born in Queens, New York City, to Afghan refugee parents who had fled war and instability. Her life changed dramatically at a very young age when her parents died tragically. Aisha and her sister entered the foster care system during their earliest years. Thankfully, they were adopted by a young Afghan couple in the Bay Area, who gave them a loving home, taught the values of hard work, perseverance, and pride in their identity, and helped shape Aisha’s sense of belonging and purpose.

Growing up, Aisha saw firsthand the struggles of everyday families from housing insecurity to economic uncertainty. Her adopted family experienced foreclosure during tough financial times, and Aisha watched neighbors and friends grapple with rising rents and shrinking opportunities. These early experiences ignited her passion for community engagement and justice.

She began her public service journey in her community, attending local council meetings and advocating for affordable housing and stronger safety nets for families like hers. In 2018, Aisha made national headlines when she was elected to the Hayward City Council becoming the first Afghan-American woman elected to public office in the United States. Her leadership and community commitment didn’t stop there. In 2022, Aisha was elected to the California State Senate, representing District 10 in the Bay Area. In doing so she became both the first Muslim and first Afghan American to serve in the California Senate. In 2024, Senator Wahab earned a doctorate of Social Work so she's now not just Senator Wahab - she's Senator Dr. Wahab!

Senator Dr. Wahab brings her lived experience as a former foster youth, adoptive daughter, and community advocate directly into her legislative work. She champions policies on:

  • Housing affordability
  • Economic equality
  • Civic engagement and education
  • Support for seniors, women, and children

Her personal journey informs her belief that every person, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds, deserves the opportunity to thrive and be heard.
