Action Alert: Protect SNAP

Right now, a bill in the Senate could take away important support for young people who’ve been in foster care.

Here’s what’s happening:
There’s currently a rule that lets people ages 18–24 who were in foster care get help buying food through SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) without having to meet strict work requirements. This rule was created just last year through a rare bipartisan agreement (that means both Republicans and Democrats supported it!).

But now, the Senate wants to remove this rule — and that would make it much harder for young people to get the critical food support needed as they transition to adulthood.

The House of Representatives didn’t include this harmful change in their version of the bill — so there’s still time to stop it.

What you can do:
Email your Representative today and ask them to stand up for young people from foster care. Tell them to make sure this harmful change is removed so young people can continue to get the food assistance they need to survive and succeed.

Subject: Protect SNAP for Young People from Foster Care

Young people who age out of foster care in our state are at risk of losing SNAP benefits that help them afford food.

A proposal in the Senate’s Agriculture bill would remove a key exemption that allows former foster youth (ages 18–24) to get SNAP without meeting strict work rules. Losing this would make life harder for youth who are just starting out, often without family or financial support.

The House didn’t include this harmful change—and Speaker Johnson can help stop it. Please urge Speaker Johnson to protect the SNAP exemption for foster youth in the final bill.

Thanks for standing up for young people from foster care.
